À la mémoire d'Edward Said
A 36-minute staged performance for string ensemble, with electronic tape of exclusive recordings from piano recitals by Edward Said at the American University of Beyrouth and at Princeton University. The disembodied sounds of Said's performance are intertwined with live music performed by 4 musicians who are gathered around an empty piano, creating resonance and counterpoint to their playing and to their voices.
Une œuvre mise en scène de 36 minutes pour ensemble à cordes, bande de piano et électronique, utilisant des enregistrements audio inédits de récitals de piano donnés par Edward Said à l'Université américaine de Beyrouth et à l'Université de Princeton. Les sons désincarnés de la performance de Said s'entremêlent avec la musique incarnée sur scène par un ensemble de 4 musiciens, qui est rassemblé autour d'un piano vide et qui fournit une résonance et un contrepoint directs à son jeu et sa voix.

The musicians are stationed around an empty piano that occupies center stage.
Several speakers are positioned on each corner of the stage. The piano tape that we hear throughout the piece is made of treated sounds of Edward Said's recordings, as well as a few of the key moments of his recorded speeches and lectures.
Electronics act as the bridge between Said's piano, reworked and spatialized on tape, and its live interaction with the written score, performed and embodied by the musicians on stage.

Plusieurs enceintes sont positionnées à chaque coin de la scène.
La bande de piano que nous entendons tout au long de la pièce est composée de sons traités des enregistrements d'Edward Said, ainsi que de quelques-uns des moments clés de ses discours et conférences enregistrés.
