ANA Y SU SOMBRA is an hour long humorous and joyous exploration of the migrant experience. Ana is a little girl whose family has moved from Mexico to America. She doesn’t feel she belongs, she misses her home and her friends, and longs to return. Her shadow, however, loves the adventure of a new place and wishes to remain in America. They fight and decide to call it quits from each other. During their respective journeys they learn the meaning of home and of voyaging, and find a peace in their new life together.
Gabriela Ortiz is Mexico’s leading composer today. Recently having her works premiered and toured by the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, ANA Y SU SOMBRA is only one of her many operas that surprise in the way that they look at compelling and contemporary issues of today. Written to be enjoyed by children and adults, this operatic storybook experience, sung in Spanish with English supertitles, is perfect for the whole family.
ANA Y SU SOMBRA est une exploration humoristique et joyeuse d'une durée d’une heure sur l'expérience des migrants. Ana est une petite fille dont la famille a quitté le Mexique pour s'installer en Amérique. Elle ne s’y sent pas chez elle, sa maison et ses amis lui manquent et elle a envie de rentrer dans son pays. Son ombre, en revanche, aime le sentiment d'aventure que lui procure ce nouveau lieu et souhaite rester en Amérique. Elles se disputent et décident de se séparer. Au cours de leurs voyages respectifs, elles en viennent à comprendre la vraie signification du foyer et du voyage, et trouvent la paix dans leur nouvelle vie commune.
Gabriela Ortiz est la compositrice mexicaine la plus connue aujourd'hui. Plusieurs de ses œuvres ont récemment été créées et présentées en tournées par l'Orchestre philharmonique de Los Angeles. ANA Y SU SOMBRA, comme ses autres opéras, offre un regard original sur des enjeux essentiels et actuels de notre monde. ABOUT THE COMPOSER
Gabriela Ortiz is one of the most vibrant musicians emerging on the international scene. Her musical language achieves an extraordinary and expressive synthesis of tradition and the avant-garde, combining high art, folk music, and jazz in novel, refined, and personal ways.
¡Unicamente la Verdad!, Ortiz's video opera created in collaboration with video artist Ruben Ortiz Torres, has received critical acclaim in Bloomington, Indiana; the Mexico City Festival and Long Beach, California. Recent orchestral commissions include Hominum for the National Symphony Orchestra of Mexico, Yanga for the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and Antropolis for the Louisiana Symphony Orchestra. Her recent opera, Luciérnaga (Firefly), for solo soprano, premiered in 2018 at the Vertice festival. The Royal Scottish National Orchestra recorded and performed her work Hominum in Fall of 2018.
In fall of 2019, The Los Angeles Philharmonic, Gustavo Dudamel, and the Tambuco Percussion Ensemble performed the world premiere of Yanga; The New World Symphony presented Hominum; and the LA Phil presented the UK premiere of Téenek - Ivenciones de territorio in their London tour. Upcoming commissions include collaborations with the Orchestre symphonique de Bretagne and the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra.
